Enniskerry

Enniskerry, located in the beautiful county of Wicklow, is one of the most picturesque and quaint villages in all of Ireland. Now, although you may not be aware of it, you may have heard of this place before. Why? Because it was the home place of Gerry Kennedy (played by Gerard Butler) in the very enjoyable 2007 film “PS I Love You”.  And, that is not Enniskerry’s only association with the big screen. The village also provided the backdrop for Laurence Olivier’s Henry V, scenes of the 1992 film “Into The West” and the 2010 film “Leap Year.” NBC’s “The Today Show” even broadcast live from Enniskerry back in 2009. It’s safe to say that, due to its charm and beauty, this Wicklow village has had its fair share of exposure on both the big and small screen over the years.

On that note, if you’re looking to escape the bright lights of Dublin and are in need of some good old-fashioned Irish tradition instead, Enniskerry is the place to go. Let us explain why…

Located 20kms south of Dublin city centre, the village is home to just under 2,000 people and it’s also home to some of Ireland’s best-loved tourist attractions. Sitting at the foot of the Wicklow Mountains, the village could not ask for a more beautiful backdrop. There are several stunning cottages, not unlike those that you see emblazoned across the front of picture-postcards. Full of quaint cafes, restaurants and little shops, it is an absolute haven for tourists who want to experience the atmosphere of a real Irish village.

For many visitors to Enniskerry, a key attraction is the numerous beautiful forest walks on offer in the wooded countryside that surrounds the picturesque village. Enniskerry offers a number of spectacular, unspoilt mountain trails, with the most popular being the Wicklow Way. So, if it’s a scenic walking tour that you’re interested in, know that there’s no better place in the east of Ireland than Enniskerry. The ornate old railway bridge in the village is also a key attraction; no doubt you’ve spotted it on Irish postcards over the years!

And if that’s not enough to make you want to pack your bags and visit one of the quaintest villages on the Emerald Isle, the nearby Powercourt Estate and Gardens will seal the deal for you. The stunning estate is home to a fine country house and over 40 acres of beautiful, finely landscaped gardens. Spend a day taking a tour of the rooms of the house and visiting the many retail units and museums inside. You could easily spend hours trailing through the gardens admiring attractions such as the Japanese gardens, The Pepperpot Tower, Triton Lake, Dolphin Pond and the Italian Garden.

And to make things a little sweeter for the man in your life, the estate also houses not one but two championship golf courses and has formerly hosted the Irish PGA Championship. Round off your trip to the Powerscourt Estate and indeed to Enniskerry with a trip up to see Powerscourt Waterfall, the largest waterfall in Ireland.
